Later today, Finnair is planning to fly an Airbus A330 from Helsinki to New York partly powered by recycled cooking oil. It is an interesting concept. The airline will not disclose the ratio of fossil fuel to cooking oil it has used until the plane touches down, but to be certified jet fuel must contain at least 50% of the traditional, dirty type.

The top 10 airlines in the U.S.

The national Airline Quality Rating is a statistical study of major airline performance in the U.S. that ranks airlines annually. Criteria for the rankings include on-time arrivals, involuntary denied boardings, mishandled baggage, and a combination of 12 customer complaint categories related to flight problems, reservations, baggage, discrimination, animals, and other issues. Flight problems, such as cancellations and delays, are the most common complaints; the Dept. of Transportation received 3,473 such complaints in 2013, the report states.
